2026 Midterms “Red Card Reckoning”Pandora’s Box of Broken Promises Vote Woody not Scar!

This past summer, we were captivated by the FIFA World Cup. Folarin Balogun’s “Red Card” suspension gripped headlines. Red Cards are issued in soccer to punish a player for a severe rule violation or dangerous misconduct and immediately eject them from the match. Sporting events bond fans together from across the world in a spirit of unity, camaraderie, and nostalgia. The dopamine spike following cliffhangers is euphoric!

The rough and tumble of politics resembles sports; both realms share strategic battles, cliffhangers, and intense rivalries. We’re on tenterhooks during barnburner playoff games and high-stakes political showdowns. However, the stakes in the political sphere are eons higher, as lives and livelihoods hang in the balance. Elected officials are deserving of Political “Red Cards” for broken promises, unethical conduct, and policies that violate the law or the Constitution.

A Madisonian government must be restored and strengthened. The late Senator Alan Simpson: “Those who travel the high road of humility in Washington, D.C., are not bothered by heavy traffic.”

Affordability: George H.W. Bush’s broken promise, “Read my lips: no new taxes,” tanked his 1992 reelection campaign.

Trump explicitly promised lower prices, inflation, and interest rates on Day One! Gas and grocery prices remain elevated; inflation and interest rates are UP! Usurious rates keep borrowers trapped on a debt hamster wheel. Tariffs are a regressive tax disproportionately impacting the poor and middle class. GOP policies reflect a Reverse Robin Hood, favoring the redistribution of wealth upward via tax breaks, from working people to the ultra-affluent.

Trump’s impolitic, slapdash remark on the economics of Iran policy triggered public and market whiplash: “I don’t think about America’s financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.” He ignored the Obama administration’s 2015 agreement with Iran that permanently prohibited them from developing nuclear weapons.

Strength is measured by how we love and care for others. Repudiate strawmen, whataboutism, and red-herring arguments bandied about to distort reality! A strong market economy should create opportunity, not concentrate it. Case in point: Speaker Mike Johnson, joined by Republican leaders, clasped hands and delivered a lengthy, “solemn” prayer, then proceeded to support legislation that cuts roughly $1 trillion from Medicaid as part of Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Act (BBBA). Jarring contrast between a “solemn” prayer and policy! A slew of brickbats was hurled at the BBBA, despite its carefully curated talking points. It disproportionately burdens low-income and working people while providing substantial tax relief to the ultra-wealthy.

Trump refused to sign the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He characterized the legislation as “a yawn” and “unimportant.” The landmark bipartisan housing affordability legislation benefits first-time homebuyers, middle-class families, and rural renters by boosting housing supply. It also restricts the number of single-family homes corporate investors can purchase.

Dr. Julie Margetta Morgan, President of The Century Foundation: “Trump’s economy serves the rich. It serves Donald Trump, his millionaire, billionaire colleagues, and banks who’ve gotten the Trump Administration to roll back protections for working families in order to maintain their profits.”

Senator Jon Ossoff: “We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. It is the wealthiest Cabinet ever. They are the elites they pretend to hate.”

Machiavellian leadership characterized by mendacity, prevarication, and sophistry has been put on notice. Buyer’s remorse?

Trump’s imperial presidency is characterized by broken promises and institutional upheaval. He seems to govern in a vacuum of isolation. Banning major news organizations from the People’s House is an opening volley in a larger assault on transparency. Good golly, Ms. Molly! We’re watching a Coachella of political corruption, as noted by David Brooks. The Sword of Damocles has awakened; a reckoning is nigh.

No Foreign Wars/America First: The Middle East is a geopolitical tempest. The unprovoked Iran war leaped from foolhardy to quagmire. Leaders could have let sleeping dogs lie and chosen diplomacy, but instead chose escalation, trading prudence for peril.

Is a Pyrrhic victory in Iran worth the human toll, astronomical price tag, global economic damage, and widening fissures with NATO allies and Gulf partners?

DOGE’s chainsaw-wielding curmudgeon, Elon Musk, gleefully spearheaded the dismantling of USAID, a cornerstone of global health infrastructure. Harvard epidemiologists estimate the dismantling contributed to roughly 700,000 deaths, two-thirds of them children who died from preventable, treatable conditions. The death toll is expected to rise.

The poor are plundered, and the needy groan under the yoke of foolhardy and myopic policies. Chickens come home to roost. A special tier of judgment belongs to the architects of cruelty, suffering, and despair.

The odyssey from political chaos to order has fresh oxygen. Cowboy Up! Rattle the reins and demand a seismic leadership shift! Vote for principled leaders of character, with a splash of rizz, whom you celebrate rather than merely tolerate.

The athletic tail is wagging the academic dog

Nobody is happy about college athletics. That unhappiness goes far beyond won-lost records. Most agree that college athletics is out of control. It often feels like what we’ve got is a bunch of semi-p

Well written and informative as always Carol. The sports analogy is a good reminder that while watching any type of sport there is a great divide depending on one’s allegiance to a particular team. Reactions to a call made by the referee are not always based on facts but rather emotions tied to who you are routing for and who you want to win. I long for the candidate/elected official who adopts a stance of right is right and wrong is wrong no matter which side they are on.

Well put Carol! This administration unfortunately reeks of corruption and greed while masking it with that of righteousness! It is sad that this is unfolding before our very eyes. Those who supported these acts and views are watching with despair alongside those of us who opposed. This administration almost seeks to dismantle unity and democracy. Our Nation was created to escape the unfairness and tyranny of British rule (unfortunately at the simultaneous oppression of many others). The purposeful intention to divide and distract our nation while selfish monetary gain is the ultimate focus is beyond evil, destructive and disheartening. Creating the exact environment that this Nation was trying to flee from! May God do a work in us and us…

Very well put Carol Massey-McCants. A cry for morality and righteousness. We are a lost society if we don’t start caring for one another and stop giving power to greed. We need a cleansing in this country. We are slowly losing freedom and equality that we fought so hard for. This sense of greed and selfishness isn’t making anyone stronger. It’s actually weakening the system. Every man for himself is leading to self destruction. This country is taking a beating from high numbers of homelessness, high numbers of mental illness, schools losing funding, people go to bed hungry everyday & the job market is suffering. The American dream of buying a home is becoming unattainable. Getting a college education is…

Your commentary

hits with sharp precision. What makes this commentary so effective is that it cuts past the usual superficial talking points and lands right on the structural dynamics driving the issue. It frames the problem in a way that doesn't just critique the status quo, but makes the underlying incentives completely transparent—and that’s where real clarity begins.

Responses like this are a reminder that the most compelling political analysis doesn't rely on outrage or empty rhetoric; it relies on clear reasoning, deep contextual understanding, and a willingness to name what others gloss over. Exceptional breakdown.
